THE GRAIN ACADEMY
The Grain Academy's Place in Western Canadian Heritage
The Grain Academy stands as a unique and historically significant educational institution within the broader cultural landscape of Western Canada. Its primary mission has consistently been to illuminate the critical role of grain and grain handling in the region’s development, chronicling the intricate processes of production and transportation from early pioneering days through to modern times. This focus on a foundational aspect of Western Canadian identity underscores its importance as a repository of knowledge and a public educator.
The concept of a Grain Museum was approved at the 1974 Annual Meeting of Alberta Wheat Pool Delegates. The museum concept was a place for people to visit and see how grain was grown and used since Western Canada was settled.
In 1979 Delegates attending the Alberta Wheat Pool meeting were advised that a place had been found for the Grain Museum at the Calgary Exhibition and Stampede Agriculture Building.
The Wheat Pool Grain Museum Society was incorporated as a non-profit society in 1979 under the Societies Act of Alberta to govern and manage the Grain Academy & Museum. This would also qualify the organisation to receive grant funding from the provincial government for their construction project.
At the 1980 Alberta Wheat Pool Annual Meeting it was reported that the Society had reached agreement with the Calgary Exhibition and Stampede for the utilization of a 4500 square feet area (432 sq. meters) for the Grain Academy & Museum in the new Round-up Centre, renamed the BMO Centre in 2007. This location, specifically on the Plus 15 Level, was selected over the original proposed location in the Agriculture Building.
“Grain Academy” was selected by the Museum Society as the official name and its doors opened to the public in July 1981. A long-term lease was signed in 1981 with Calgary Exhibition & Stampede.
Initially, Alberta Wheat Pool fully funded all operating costs. The first members of the Alberta Wheat Pool Grain Museum Board of Directors were the members of Alberta Wheat Pool’s Board. In 1998 the decision was made to elect independent Board members to the Society Board.
Funding of operating costs continued when Alberta Wheat Pool and Manitoba Pool Elevators merged in 1998 to form Agricore. Agricore and United Grain Growers merged in 2001 to form Agricore United and funding of operating costs continued until 2007. (The Saskatchewan Wheat Pool acquired Agricore United in 2007 to form Viterra Limited which was merged with Bunge Global SA in 2025).
Beginning in 2001 the Wheat Pool Grain Museum Society raised funds to operate the Grain Academy & Museum from donors and funds raised from Alberta Gaming and Liquor Commission for volunteering at casinos. Operating costs were kept to a bare minimum thanks to the support of numerous volunteers. Although there was no charge for admission to the Grain Academy & Museum, donations toward operating costs were encouraged and a small fee was charged for hosting school groups. Every eighteen months the Wheat Pool Grain Museum Society board, staff and volunteers worked at a casino to raise funds to offset most of the operating costs.

Located in the middle of Stampede Park in Calgary, the Grain Academy & Museum told the story and importance of ‘seed’ for food and non-food products, and the evolution of farming from early homesteads into today’s modern farming and grain handling industry. The history of grain and the everyday life of early pioneers came alive through stories, videos and electronic displays. School groups experienced the fundamentals of farming through interactive games, hand threshing, flour milling and seed planting. For national, international and urban visitors, knowledgeable curators explained all aspects of grain production from past to present including the handling, processing and marketing of grain. An average of 6,000 visitors per year toured the Grain Academy & Museum at Stampede Park.
Many fine people devoted countless hours and considerable energy and creativity in making the Grain Academy what it is. Out of a sense of ownership, Alberta Pool alumni continued to turn out to volunteer at casinos and the Calgary Stampede.
In 2019 the Grain Academy’s lease at Stampede Park was terminated to prepare for renovations and upgrades to the BMO Centre. The Museum Society selected Pioneer Acres Museum as the new home for the Academy. Ron Carey had disposed of part of his antique truck collection so his original building - 6,000 square feet of indoor heated space - was vacant and ready to house a new display.
From the fall of 2019 until the spring of 2021 members of Pioneer Acres undertook the massive task of dismantling and re-establishing the Grain Academy. Funding for this project was provided by the Weston Family Foundation for which Pioneer Acres is extremely grateful. The Wheat Pool Grain Museum Society also transferred their remaining funds to Pioneer Acres upon their dissolution.
The central feature of the new Grain Academy is an antique boxcar being used as a gallery to showcase photographs of various Alberta grain elevators.
A typical grain elevator office from the past is also displayed.
There is also an antique stationary engine that is typical of those that were used to power the old elevators.

Pioneer Acres opened the Grain Academy to the public in the summer of 2021 and a Grand Opening Ceremony was held on May 14, 2022.
The original concept of “a place for people to visit and see how grain was grown and used since Western Canada was settled” continues at Pioneer Acres Museum.
