The Traction Steam Engine Era
A dramatic chapter in industrial history
The rise and fall of the steam traction engine manufacturing industry in North America is one of the most dramatic chapters in industrial history. For roughly half a century, these massive iron giants transformed the Great Plains and the prairies from unbroken sod into the breadbasket of the world.
During the peak of the agricultural steam era—roughly from 1880 to 1930—there were approximately 85 to 90 distinct companies that manufactured steam traction engines in North America.
The vast majority were based in the United States, but a robust and highly respected group of Canadian manufacturers also built specialized engines tailored specifically for the harsh conditions of the northern prairies.
J.I. Case Threshing Machine Co. (Racine, WI) was the undisputed giant. Case manufactured over 36,000 steam engines—more than half of all traction engines ever built in North America.

Canadian manufacturing was primarily centered in southwestern Ontario, which served as the industrial heartland for the country’s agricultural expansion into Western Canada. Canadian builders could not match Case for sheer volume, but they built legendary, heavy-duty machines designed to handle the massive acreages and tough sod of the Canadian prairies.
Sawyer-Massey Co. Ltd. (Hamilton, ON) – Often considered the premier Canadian builder, highly active in Western Canada.
Waterloo Manufacturing Co. Ltd. (Waterloo, ON) – Famous for their “Lion Brand” engines.
George White & Sons Co. (London, ON) – Known for building remarkably simple, rugged, and reliable engines.
John Goodison Thresher Co. (Sarnia, ON)
Robert Bell Engine & Thresher Co. (Seaforth, ON) – Built engines under license from the American firm Port Huron.
Waterous Engine Works (Brantford, ON)
American-Abell Engine & Thresher Co. (Toronto, ON) – Formed when American interests bought out the historic John Abell Engine & Machine Works, building the famous “20th Century” line of Canadian engines.
The Industrial Consolidation
The decline of the steam manufacturing industry was incredibly swift. By World War I, the writing was on the wall; by the mid-1920s, virtually every major builder had ceased steam production entirely.
The industry was undone by a combination of rapid technological advancements:
The Internal Combustion Engine: Gas and kerosene tractors (like the lightweight, mass-produced Fordson or the reliable John Deere model D) were drastically smaller, cheaper, and safer.
The Labor Crisis: A steam traction engine required a highly skilled engineer to manage the pressure, a fireman to stoke the box, and a dedicated team with a water wagon and fuel team just to keep it moving. Gas tractors could be turned on instantly by a single operator.
Weight and Infrastructure: At 15 to 20 tons, the largest steam rigs routinely broke through wooden country bridges and packed down the soil. Gas tractors offered a vastly superior power-to-weight ratio.
By the time World War II arrived, the scrap metal drives claimed thousands of these magnificent machines. Today, the legacy of this short but explosive manufacturing era lives on exclusively through dedicated heritage museums and steam clubs, where these survivors are meticulously maintained to whistle, hiss, and work just as they did a century ago.
